I’ll add to these as I get asked. You can ask me a question here.
About the books
What do you write?
I write romantasy/romantic fantasy and urban fantasy as M.J. Scott and contemporary romance as Melanie Scott. I did write some romances (the Cloud Bay series) as Emma Douglas but they’ve been re-released as Melanie books now).
Where do I start with your books?
If you like:
Urban fantasy with some steam and romance – start with Wicked Games.
Romantasy/romantic fantasy – start with The Shattered Court.
Are your books in Kindle Unlimited?
No, I’m a wide author. They are available for sale in ebook at all the usual places plus my own store (click store on the menu bar). They are all in Kobo Unlimited and available to libraries via Libby/Hoopla etc if you are looking for ways to save some pennies on books (aren’t we all).
Do you write cliffhangers?
Not in my Melanie books (well, not so far). Some of the M.J. books do have cliffhangers but the ones that do are in complete series currently, so you can binge away happily.
Are your books in paperback or audiobook?
All of them are in paperback. You can order them from the usual paperback type places like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Bookshop.org. If you need the paperback ISBN, then go to the individual book’s page and the ISBN is under the Info tab. That’s what you need to look up the paperback in a store or give to a smaller bookstore so they can order it for you.
I’m just starting to do audiobooks, starting with the TechWitch series. Wicked Games and Wicked Words are both out in audiobook (and you can find those ISBNs on the info tab too. Give them a listen (so I can afford to do more!) 😀
Do I need to read your series in order?
I recommend you do, yes. All my fantasy and urban fantasy series have ongoing plots across the series. The romances kind of do too. You could probably read them out of order but it’s more fun if you don’t.
Tell me more about Kobo Plus
Kobo Plus works like Kindle Unlimited. It’s a monthly subscription that lets you read (and listen if you add the audiobook option) to your heart’s content. For author’s it’s great because you don’t have to be exclusive like you do in Kindle Unlimited. So authors who aren’t in KU like me, might just be in Kobo Plus.
You don’t need a Kobo e-reader, you can use their app on any device.
Find out more on Kobo’s website.
About me
How long have you been writing?
A long time now. My first book came out in 2011 and it took me about ten years to sell that first one!
Do you have pets?
Yes, I have two cats. The Diva kitty (who is a typically spicy and opinionated tortoiseshell though also a big old scaredy pants) called Vesper and the Not So Tiny Tuxie (my tuxedo kitten, Billie, who is currently 8 months old, the complete opposite to Vesper in that she loves everyone and isn’t scared of much at all. There was a bit of break between my previous tortie passing away and me adding a new friend for Vesper and consequently she is yet to be entirely convinced Billie is a Good Idea. But this is a cat who once took six months to decide a new cat bed wasn’t a deadly cat trap, so maybe they will yet end up best buddies.
Previous cats that I sometimes talk about:
The Elder Tortie/The Big Tortie: Callie who was a calico/tortie who was unusually sweet for a tortie
The Fuzzy Girl: Sophie who was a fluffy grey and white sweetie
The Orange Cat: Tabasco a red burmese who was more dog than cat, was both adorable and annoyingly stubborn and very loud
The Grey Cat: Jessie who was a smoky grey fluffy tabby who put up with Tabasco yowling at her and loving her too much.
What's your caffeine of choice?
Honestly I’m a Coke Zero girl. Coffee makes me sick and tea just doesn’t quite do it (I don’t love hot drinks as a whole though I will drink herbal tea now and then).
Where else can I find you?
I mostly hang out on Instagram and Facebook. Those links are on my About page, as are links to follow me on BookBub or Amazon if that’s your thing.
I do some signings in Australia, so either follow me on my socials or sign up to my newsletter to find out more about those. None planned in 2026 though.
What do you like to do besides writing?
I read a lot because the bookworm life is for me. I like most fibre arts like cross stitch/embroidery, crochet, knitting, sewing. I am the granddaugher of a baker and I love to bake. I manage to keep some plants alive and I like to walk and swim when I am being exercise-y. I’m also fond of TV, movies and musicals.
Why is the spelling on this site sometimes weird?
I’m an Aussie and while I manage to write my books in US english, the Aussie/UK spellings tend to slip out when I’m writing here or online.
About writing
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
I’m a pantser, so I find out what’s happening as I write it. In ongoing series, I tend to start having at least some vague idea of what might happen in a book that’s later in a series, but not always. I also write out of order because my brain likes making things difficult apparently.
What writing tools do you like?
I draft in Scrivener or dictate and dump that into Scrivener. Scrivener makes it very easy to move things around which is handy when you write out of order like me. Once I get into serious having to hand the book over to an editor mode, I move to Word. I format my books in Vellum.
Other than that I make mood boards (on Pinterest) for my series and make playlists. Though often my brain gets obsessed with one song for a book and I end up listening to it many many times. Which borks my Spotify stats most years. There’s a Lorde song that’s still my most listened ever because I listened to it so much writing the Four Arts books that still no other song has come close.
How/where do you write?
The where is mostly at home with headphones on and no distractions other than you know, the pull of the internet and frequent nagging from the cats.
The how varies a bit from book to book but I write a first draft that is messy and very ‘talking heads’ with lots of dialogue and not a lot of everything else that makes up a book. I either write at a computer or dictate to try and save my hands. When I get stuck I will see if I can skip ahead to another scene that I can “see” in my head, so I often write out of order and have to put pieces together.
